Southern Blvd. Bridge Car and Boat Restrictions

In preparation for the shift of traffic to the temporary bridge to the north of the existing bridge, nightly lane closures and restricted span openings for boats will go in effect starting Friday, April 6.  The temporary bridge will be open sometime during the Summer of 2018. See the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) news release below:

FDOT NEWS RELEASE — Vehicle Restrictions: The westbound lane of the Southern Boulevard Causeway will be closed 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly from Friday, April 6, to Sunday, April 8, as preparations are made to shift travel lanes to the north. Flaggers will maintain two-way traffic – one direction at a time – in the eastbound lane.

Marine Restrictions

The navigable Intracoastal Waterway (ICCW) through the Southern Boulevard Bridge will have full-channel closures from Monday, April 9, to Monday, April 30. A double-span opening (full channel open) may be requested between Tuesday, April 17, and Monday, April 30, if four-hour notice is provided by calling Clay Bores, Project Superintendent, at (407) 488-0738. The schedule of channel restrictions is published in the U.S. Coast Guard’s Local Notice to Mariners at www.navcen.uscg.gov.

The Southern Boulevard (SR 80) Bridges Replacement Project includes replacing the existing bascule (draw) bridge and tide relief bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICWW) and Lake Worth Lagoon between the Town of Palm Beach and the City of West Palm Beach. The project limits are between Washington Road in West Palm Beach and State Road A1A/South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach. New decorative lighting, pedestrian features, traffic signals, signage and drainage are included. A temporary bridge will be built north of the existing bridge to maintain traffic while the replacement bascule bridge is under construction. Active construction began April 3, 2017, and will last until early 2021. The estimated construction cost is $93 million.
