Our Town with William Kelly: Road paving to impact traffic near Southern Boulevard Bridge

Workers will be paving the road near the Southern Boulevard Bridge, the week of June 26.

Flaggers will direct motorists while traffic is shifted to accommodate the paving operations daily from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The paving will occur in multiple locations, but only one location will be impacted at a time, according to the DOT. Paving will occur on Southern Boulevard (State Road 80) between the main bascule bridge and Mar-a-Lago, the DOT said.

On Tuesday, the eastbound lane in that area will be closed and traffic will be shifted over to the westbound lane to accommodate the paving work, according to project spokesperson Andrea Pacini. On Wednesday, traffic will be moved over to the eastbound lane. The work is expected to occur through Thursday.

If weather permits, additional paving may be scheduled later in the week on a portion of Flagler Drive, she said.

The contractor is Johnson Brothers Construction.

After more than five years of construction, the new Southern Boulevard Bridge opened to drivers and pedestrians in September. The $97 million bridge, which replaced an earlier version built in 1950, is one of three spans that link Palm Beach and West Palm Beach.
