Our Town by William Kelly: Top U.S. diplomat to headline Civic Association engagement

Former Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley will be the keynote speaker at the Palm Beach Civic Association’s Signature Series program on Thursday, March 13.

Michael Pucillo, chairman and CEO of the Civic Association, will interview Bagley in a club-chair format during the program, which will begin at 10 a.m. at The Beach Club, 755 North County Road.

Pucillo said the Civic Association is delighted to present Bagley, a veteran and distinguished diplomat who stepped down last month as U.S. ambassador to Brazil.

“Her insights on the changes rapidly taking place in Brazil and South America will be of great interest to our members, and we look forward to a thoughtful and interesting discussion,” Pucillo said.

General James L. Jones, who was originally scheduled as speaker for the March 13 Signature Series program, recently postponed until a future date.

Bagley is a diplomat, attorney, political activist and philanthropist who was U.S. ambassador to Brazil from 2023 until 2025 and to Portugal from 1994 until 1997.

She was senior advisor to secretaries of state Madeleine Albright (1997-2001), Hillary Clinton (2010-2013), and John Kerry (2013-2017).

Bagley has been a Civic Association director since 2019.

She has served as a member of the board of directors of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the American Ireland Fund, the Atlantic Council, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and as co-chair of the Global Leadership Council, UN Foundation.

Bagley graduated cum laude from Regis College in Weston, Mass., with a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish. She is a 1987 cum laude graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, where she obtained a J.D. degree in international law. She is a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar and District of Columbia Bar.

Her appearance will mark the third and final Signature Series program for the 2024-25 season. The first two speakers were political analyst Charlie Cook on December 5 and veteran broadcaster Deborah Norville on January 9.

Bagley’s Signature Series appearance is being sponsored by Third Federal Savings & Loan.

The March 13 program is open to Silver, Leadership and Next Gen memberships and above ($1,000 and above).
