Tom Costello is an NBC News correspondent based in Washington, D.C., reporting for TODAY, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC and NBC NewsNOW. Since joining NBC News in 2004, he has served as the network’s lead aviation and space correspondent while also covering cybersecurity, transportation and the economy.

Among his high-profile assignments are the mid-air collision near Washington, D.C., investigations into Boeing’s 737 MAX, the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the “Miracle on the Hudson” emergency landing, the Titan submersible tragedy, and the new era of space exploration.

His reporting has taken him behind the scenes at NASA, Space Force and Space Command, and in 2023, he joined a Norwegian/NATO patrol tracking Russian submarines in the North Sea.

The first journalist to receive the National Air Traffic Controllers Association’s Sentinel of Safety Award, Costello has also earned numerous national and regional Emmy, Edward R. Murrow, Sigma Delta Chi and National Headliner awards. He holds degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder and Boston University-Brussels, as well as a certificate in Cybersecurity Risk Management from HarvardX.
