BREAKING NEWS: Town reopens South Ocean Boulevard near Mar-a-Lago

South Ocean Boulevard has reopened to through-traffic between South County Road and Southern Boulevard, the town said in an email alert shortly before noon on Thursday, August 22.

The stretch of road in front of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence had been closed to all but local traffic, around the clock, since July 20.

The U.S. Secret Service ordered the road closed to enhance security for Trump, the former president and current GOP nominee for president in the November 5 general election. The Secret Service initially said the road would remain closed at least through the November 5 election. The closure was in effect regardless of whether Trump was in residence or out of town.

The Town of Palm Beach questioned the legality of the decision to close the road while Trump is out of town.

The closure touched off concern from many residents and town officials about traffic impacts. South Ocean Boulevard is the only road that connects the northern and southern portions of the island.

Mar-a-Lago and the Secret Service reached an agreement, announced on August 19, allowing the road to be reopened to through traffic while Trump is out of town.
