BREAKING NEWS: Julie Araskog to seek fifth term on Town Council

Town Council member Julie Araskog is seeking a fifth term on the council in next year’s election.

Araskog, whose two-year term expires in April, filed candidacy papers on Wednesday with the Palm Beach Town Clerk’s office.

Araskog said Friday she feels honored and blessed to have served the community for almost eight years and that she is ready to continue serving the people of Palm Beach.

“My goal has always been to give a voice to our residents, fight to keep our small-town charm and always protect our unique quality of life for residents,” she said. “Of course, it is essential to keep our residents informed and listen to what they have to say before making decisions – and those remain my guiding principles.”

Like all communities, Palm Beach faces challenges, Araskog said.

“I plan to continue leading from up front and to collaborate with my colleagues to take on each issue in the responsible, innovative way I always have,” she said.

Araskog is a North End resident and an attorney.

She joined the council in 2017 when she defeated Martin Klein in a race for the Group 1 council seat. She won a second term in the 2019 town election when she beat back a challenge from René Silvin.

Araskog won additional terms without opposition in 2021 and 2023.

Araskog chairs the council’s Ordinance, Rules and Standards Committee and is a member of its Public Safety Committee.

In addition to Araskog’s, the two-year terms of Mayor Danielle Moore and Councilman Ted Cooney also expire in April.

Moore filed papers this week to seek a third term as mayor and issued a written statement on Friday.

As of Friday afternoon, Cooney had not filed papers and could not be immediately reached for comment on whether he intends to pursue a third term on the council.

So far, no opposition to any of the incumbents appears to have emerged.

The deadline to seek elective office is at the close of the Town Caucus, a New England-style meeting where candidates are nominated for mayor or a specific council seat.

This year’s caucus will be on Tuesday, December 3, at 3:30 p.m. in the council chambers at Town Hall.

If any seats are contested, a town election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11.

Terms are two years for all elective officials.
