Mr. Tiefel was with Marriott International for 42 years and President of the Lodging Group from 1993 to 1999, responsible for the development, marketing and operation of all lodging brands and timeshares worldwide. He retired as Vice Chairman in 2003. He is also Chairman Emeritus of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and is a past director of Bulgari Hotels and Resorts.
Mr. Tiefel joined the CarMax Board of Directors in 2002 when the Company became public. He served as Lead Independent Director of CarMax, Inc. (NYSE), the largest retailer of used cars in the United States from 2002-2019 and as Chairman from 2007-2016.
He attended Williams College and graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a degree in hotel management. He also completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program and in 1998 received an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University.
Mr. Tiefel is a graduate and Honorary Life Trustee of Valley Forge Military Academy and College, a past Trustee of Johnson & Wales University (2001 – 2009) and is on the Board of Governors for the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Medicine. He is Immediate Past Board Chairman and a Trustee of the Town of Palm Beach United Way. He and Mrs. Tiefel were Co-Chairmen of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society (2012 – 2013) and were honored with the United Way Distinguished Citizen award in 2019. He is a member of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach and he and Mrs. Tiefel were recipients of the Preservation Foundation’s Ballinger Award for a restoration that best exemplifies Palm Beach architectural heritage (2014). He and his wife, Norma, are residents of Palm Beach.
