A Break from the Heat – What Will El Niño Bring this Season

A break from record heat was welcome this week as the first cool-front of the season arrived.

Last Monday the low was 68 degrees and the temperature only went up to 81 with low humidity. The trend continued through mid-week.

But this weekend is another story with 50-80 percent chance of rain. The forecast is for the cool front, that extends from Nova Scotia to South Florida, to stall on top of us. Stay dry!

For the Season, forecasters are predicting El Niño, which is triggered by a periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific, to take hold of the atmosphere this Palm Beach Season. That typically means a wetter and cooler season in Palm Beach than normal; but, not all El Niño’s are alike.

When El Niño conditions develop, this can alter the jet stream pattern over the U.S., and this is particularly noticeable in the winter.

Often in El Niño winters, the Pacific jet stream is amplified and reaches across the southern tier of the Lower 48. This can result in wetter-than-average conditions across the South due to the placement of the storm track.
