Publix heads to Council without ARCOM recommendation
Today, after complimenting Publix for "coming a long way," the Town's Architectural Commission decided not to recommend the latest new store design to the Palm Beach Town Council. By a unanimous vote, the application was deferred to the August ARCOM meeting.
Publix officials stated they would seek Town Council approval in August without the ARCOM endorsement. Citing the need to get underway quickly, supermarket officials will ask the Council for variances so construction can begin in 2011. The final design would be completed later with input from the Town's architectural advisory board.
Commission Chair Jeff Smith applauded Publix for the latest renderings, but stated that, in his opinion, ARCOM could not approve the new store in its current form. "Basically, we're still trying to disguise a box," he said.
