Whitefly management, education in the offing with UF-organized working group

Whiteflies have become a major issue in South Florida with at least three to four different species. Of particular concern to Palm Beach residents are the ficus, rugose spiraling and silverleaf whiteflies. Many residents have noticed plants losing leaves, turning yellow or covered with a sticky material called honeydew. In many cases, this honeydew supports the growth of a fungus called sooty mold. The leaves, walkways, or even cars and outside furniture become covered with the sticky material and sometimes wax from the insects. Whiteflies can be controlled with pesticides and with the help of other organisms. The town manager and other Town of Palm Beach officials are addressing the issue. They have taken a unique and proactive approach. They’ve asked state and federal scientists to address the issue, which has resulted in the establishment of a Whitefly Working Group.
